INSTRUCTIONS
Before
After
1.
Remove the buttons and the pockets from the jacket.
2.
Cut the jacket or coat in two, then work the upper half.
3.
Determine the length of the jacket and mini-skirt you are going to make according to your needs.
4.
Draw a horizontal line, pin the layers of fabric together above and below the line to prevent the lining from slipping and to ensure you cut the fabric neatly and correctly.
5.
Cut along your horizontal line.
6.
The jacket sleeves were made in two parts.
7.
We unstitched and ironed the front part (1) of the sleeve to design a new shape.
8.
Redraw the new shape of the sleeve and add a 1 cm seam allowance on each side. Cut off the surplus fabric and repeat for the lining.
9.
Unpick 15 cm of the inner seam of the sleeve. Sew together part 1 and 2, right sides together 1 cm from the edge and iron. Repeat this step for the lining. Then repeat point 3 and 4 for the fabric and the lining.
10.
At the end of the sleeve, fold up a hem of 4 cm on the back and iron the fold. Hold the hem in place with an invisible stitch. Make a 1 cm pleat at the bottom of the lining, pin the lining 3 cm from the edge of the sleeve and hand stitch.
11.
Unpick all of the facing and 5 to 8 cm of the neckline, iron the seams.
12.
Place both at the front, right sides together, mark and cut 2 cm on the middle front in order to remove the double breast from your jacket.
13.
Pin the zip, right sides together, on the centre front of the jacket.
14.
Leave a 1.5 cm seam allowance at the top and 4,5 cm bottom. Attach zipper foot “E” to your machine, select the straight stitch and sew
15.
Repeat these steps for the other side of the zip.
16.
Place the lining, right sides together, on the centre front. The zip will be fixed between the two fabrics. Pin and tack the fabrics and sew starting at the neckline 1 cm from the edge
17.
When you have finished sewing, cut the surplus fabric in the corners at an angle in order to obtain a neat line when the jacket is turned the right way out. Iron.
18.
Turn the facing inside out and hold in place with a tacking stitch. Iron. Make a 3 cm fold at the bottom of the jacket for the hem. Iron and hand stitch in place.
19.
Lay your jacket flat. Turn up the underside of the lining 1 cm and iron. Pin the lining to the hem of the jacket 2 cm from the edge. Make sure that the lining is not pulling. Hand stitch the lining to the hem. If you do not have enough material to make a hem, you can sew a false hem.
Congratulations you have just completed your jacket !
